The May Photowalk scheduled for this Sunday at McLean’s Auto Wrecking is OFFICIALLY A GO!

Thanks to veteran photowalker Frederic Rivollier, arrangements have been made at McLean’s for Sunday, May 26th at 3pm.  There is limited parking available, so car-pooling is recommended. We will all meet at the carpool lot at 401 & Townline Rd at 2:15 and leave from there at 2:30. Even if you prefer to drive yourself, please meet us at 2:25 and directions will be given from there.

If you’re unfamiliar with the legend of McLean’s, check out this article from the Guelph Mercury:http://www.guelphmercury.com/news/local/article/850481–rockwood-auto-wrecking-yard-a-photographer-s-dream

It is strongly recommended that you bring plenty of water and bug spray!!

Central Presbyterian Church

This month’s photowalk will take place on Sunday, April 21st at 3pm. The folks at the beautiful old Central Presbyterian Church have graciously given us access to the sanctuary and bell tower. We will also have access to the area between the church building and the river. We have access to the church building from 3-4pm and then we can meander over to Cafe13 (just across the river) for refreshments by 4:30pm.

Central Church is located in downtown Galt on Queen’s Square at the west end of the Main St Bridge. Please enter through the main tower doors.

March Photowalk – Westfield Heritage Village

westfieldNext month’s photowalk will take place on Sunday March 17th at 2pm at Westfield Heritage Village, a short drive out of town at 1049 Kirkwall Road (also referred to as RR 552), Rockton, ON.

If you’ve never been to this lovely venue before you’ll be pleasantly surprised to find many interesting photo opportunities. A collection of 30 historical buildings lovingly restored by hundreds of volunteers, this location is nestled in a 130 hectare parcel of land which includes woodland, meadows and trails. Fully costumed volunteers staff the site and are always willing to strike a pose for photographers.

During the month of March, Westfield hosts “Maple Syrup Days” every Sunday from 10am-4pm. You will be able to see how maple syrup was made during three different time periods – and there are samples! Horse drawn wagon rides also run throughout the course of the day. This is an ideal family outing if you were considering bringing little ones along this month.

There is an admission fee which supports the ongoing operations of the site – tickets can be purchased at a discount in advance here. Our family makes great use of an annual pass to the Hamilton Conservation Authority which includes unlimited admission to Westfield and many other beautiful conservation areas.  Details about the passes can be found here.

We will round up the day with some social time at the Kiwi, 47 Dickson St., Cambridge, at approximately 4pm.

Looking forward to seeing everyone on March 17th!

Upcoming events:
We are tentatively scheduled for Central Presbyterian Church in April and Mclean’s Auto Wreckers in in May.

February Photowalk – Cambridge Butterfly Conservatory

February 10, 2013 by Tammy Quigley

The winter months prove challenging in terms of finding an interesting (and warm) location for our photowalk.  This month’s walk venue definitely meets both those criteria! Our walk will take place on Sunday February 17th, 2013 at 3pm at the Cambridge Butterfly Conservatory. The conservatory is located at 2500 Kossuth Road, Cambridge.  While we have tried to always choose venues that are cost free, you will be required to pay an entrance fee ($11.50 for adults if you buy on site, 10% discount if you buy ahead online here).

Rice Paper Butterfly |20121117_CRC2934A couple of things to keep in mind at this location: Tripods are not allowed (you may use your flash). You will also need a few minutes for your camera to acclimatize to the conservatory environment.  Another tip – dress in layers!  The conservatory is kept at anywhere between 24 to 28 degrees Celsius with high humidity. Our family has been known to pack sandals and sundresses to change into upon arrival.

As always, we also invite everyone to join us in some social time after our walk.  We will meet around 5pm at Beertown at 561 Hespeler Road.  We also encourage you to post your photos online and share the link with us on Facebook.  If you do use Flickr we also have a group here.  You can also find some butterfly inspiration on Flickr here.

See you all on the 17th!

Holiday Photowalk This Sunday

December 28, 2012 by Colin Carmichael

Our next photowalk is just around the corner!! Time flies during the holidays, it seems. We will meet at the Java Garden Ernie’s Roadhouse in Hespeler anytime after 4:15 or so and head out for our walk at 4:30.

We’ll head up Adam Street, around the Library, down Tannery St past the fire hall and old City Hall, to Queen St. then along Queen to the Guelph Ave Bridge.

We’ll end up back at Ernie’s for snacks and bevvies.

Don’t forget to dress for the weather – and to be ready for some low-light photography, which probably, but not necessarily, means a tripod.

Updated:
A map with the start/finish and recommended route.

St. George Photowalk this weekend!!

November 14, 2012 by Colin Carmichael

Our November walk will take place in the quaint village of St. George, just a short drive south of Cambridge on Sunday November 18th at 3pm.  While I’m not personally all that familiar with the village I hear there are some interesting spots to shoot.

Parking – There is a public parking lot across from the Post Office – 33 High St.http://goo.gl/maps/xikXq

From there you can head to 44 Main St where we will meet in front of the Brown Dog Coffee Shoppe.  There apparently is an old cemetery along with some interesting architecture in the downtown area.  We will finish the day with our social gathering at the St. George Arms, a wonderful local pub at 24 Main St. South at approximately 4:30-5:00 pm depending on how long we last outside.  While the weather forecast looks great it will be chilly out so make sure you dress warmly!  Looking forward to seeing you and your photos!

If you’re looking for some further information about the Village, take a look at the Brant County website http://www.brant.ca/forvisitors/communitiesinbrant.shtml

Thanks to Tammy and Corina for gathering most of the above info!
